Breaking up is so expensive to do
DIVORCE now comes with a price tag of £28,000 - which is twice what it cost in 2003.
That is the average overall cost to a couple for breaking up their marriage, according to Norwich Union.
Costs include legal fees, maintenance payments, setting up a new home, child care, and splitting cash savings and treats such as holidays, plus single-shopping.
Norwich Union calculated that the bill adds up to £14,000 for each person, compared with £6,525 in 2003.
Overall, failed marriages cost British couples £4.3bn each year, with almost two-thirds coming from their personal savings, the insurer said.
